The sacrament of Confirmation is usually celebrated at a Mass in which the bishop presides. Confirmation candidates choose a sponsor, much like a godparent. Sponsors are people with a deep Catholic faith who have celebrated all three Sacraments of Initiation. Their role is to help the candidate live out the baptismal promises that will be renewed during this celebration. The gift of the Holy Spirit is received during the anointing as a spiritual sign and seal to make you more like Christ. The bishop extends his hands over the candidate and prays, this is called the "laying on of hands," which is a sign of Confirmation. The bishop uses Chrism oil to anoint and as he does this, he calls them by name saying, "Name be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit." Symbols of the Holy Spirit also represent Confirmation.
