Reconciliation is also called Penance or Confession. During Reconciliation, we confess our sins and receive a penance (something to amend for our sins) but the gift is to be reconciled with Jesus. God's mercy and forgiveness is freely received through the priest during this sacrament. Our sins offend God and the entire community because one of our members has failed in being a sign of God's grace. The power of God's love, peace and justice in the world is diminished through the sinful actions. There is less peace in our families when we are stubborn and angry; there is less love when we speak against another race; there is less justice when we want everything for ourselves. The priest wears a purple stole, which is why purple is usually a sign of Reconciliation. The beauty of this healing sacrament is that we can receive it as often as we want and there is nothing we can say in confession that will make Jesus love us less. He is our best friend and wants to be reunited with us. For more info on Reconciliation see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs 1422-1498.
